Daniel Egan, MD, MBA

Dan Egan, MD, MBA is the third program director of the Harvard Affiliated Emergency Medicine Residency Program. Dr. Egan is a graduate of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and then completed his emergency medicine residency at HAEMR where he was Chief Resident and graduated in 2006. He completed an Advanced Certificate in Adult Learning and Leadership for Medical Educators at Teachers College (Columbia University). Prior to coming back to Boston, Dr. Egan worked at several sites in NYC where he was involved in residency leadership as APD and PD and most recently a Vice Chair of Education. Outside of HAEMR, Dr. Egan serves on the Board of Directors for CORD (Council of Residency Directors in Emergency Medicine). He serves as a Decision Editor for Academic Emergency Medicine Education and Training. Dr. Egan is interested in all aspects of residency education and leading a program with academic and clinical rigor, attention to wellness and a supportive environment where residents can use their voices for advocacy and to promote change. Outside of medicine, Dr. Egan is an active singer and was a member of the NYC Gay Men’s Chorus for nine years before relocating to Boston and recently became a dog dad to a cockapoo, Charley.

Laura Welsh , MD
Associate Program Director


Laura Welsh, MD, is the associate program director and is an attending at both MGH and BWH. Dr. Welsh graduated from the University of Massachusetts School of Medicine and then completed her emergency medicine residency at HAEMR, where she was Chief Resident. She completed the Medical Education Research Fellowship at the University of Washington in 2018, and most recently, Dr. Welsh served as the Associate Program Director Boston Medical Center before returning to HAEMR.  Her academic interests are feedback, career coaching, and curricular development, particularly around reproductive justice and harm reduction for people who use drugs. 

Derek Monette, MD, MHPE
Assistant Program Director

Derek Monette MD, MHPE is an assistant program director of HAEMR and an assistant professor of emergency medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Monette earned his medical degree from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and completed his residency and medical education fellowship at HAEMR. His academic interests include clinical and simulation-based debriefing, interprofessional education, and  leadership development. He has served as faculty at the Harvard Macy Institute and the Debriefing Academy and has a strong interest in creating opportunities for residents to gain expertise in medical education. 

Carrie Commissaris, MD
Assistant Program Director

Carrie Commissaris, MD, is an assistant program director of HAEMR and attending physician at Brigham and Women’s Emergency Department. She completed her medical degree and residency training in Emergency Medicine at the University of Michigan. She completed a fellowship in Medical Education at the University of Michigan in 2022 and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Education of Health Professions at Johns Hopkins University.  Her academic interests include evidenced-based multimedia learning, engaging presentation design, equity in the residency recruitment process, and curriculum development.

David Peak, MD
Assistant Program Director

David Peak, MD, is an assistant program director of HAEMR and an attending physician and assistant professor of emergency medicine at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Peak completed his residency training at Boston Medical Center and completed additional training in hyperbaric medicine. He conducts research on trauma patients who develop chronic pain and post traumatic stress disorder as well as other complications. He enjoys music and sports including running, swimming and scuba diving. He also enjoys his work with the hometown New England Patriots and Boston Bruins and especially, the HAEMR residents! He lives with his wife and daughter (and their cat, Kai).

Marcus Wooten, MD
Assistant Program Director

Marcus Wooten, MD, is an assistant program director and attending physician at both MGH and BWH. Dr. Wooten graduated from Howard University College of Medicine with his Doctor of Medicine in 2020. He graduated residency as Chief Academic Resident at Summa Health in Akron, OH in 2023. He completed a Medical Education Fellowship in 2025 at The Ohio State Wexner Medical Center, where he also served roles as an Interim Program Director, Social Media Co-Chair and member of Social Emergency Medicine Committee initiatives in the Columbus, Ohio Community. Dr. Wooten is currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Educational Studies in Biomedical Education from The Ohio State. He also serves as a committee member on ACEP Academic Affairs Committee. Dr. Wooten’s current interests are pipeline programing, educational outreach, and recruitment. He enjoys trail walking, reading manga, playing RPG videogames, and cheering on the Washington Commanders!
